How the Game Was Developed

Nowadays, historians do not have an unambiguous version of the appearance of roulette. There are lots of theories about the creation of this game. Some experts even believe that the monks from the monasteries played roulette, thus brightening up their loneliness.

The most common version is that roulette was created by the mathematician Blaise Pascal in 1655. Yet, he was not engaged in the development of this gambling game. He carried out research aimed at developing a perpetual motion machine. At that time, he conducted experiments with the wheel and the rotating ball on it, and roulette turned out as a by-product. Someone noticed this idea and created a new gambling game that was loved all over the world.

It is also believed that roulette was created in China and then brought to Europe through trade between Chinese and Dominican monks. Another version suggests that the Romans were playing games by turning the wheels on chariots while they were lying on their side, and this led to the creation of roulette.

Roulette gained popularity in France in several years. Yet, the Revolution of 1789 stopped this movement because the government banned such activities.

In 1842, the Blanc brothers complemented roulette with a zero sector. Around this time, the game was becoming famous in the West.

Rules

The dealer invites all the gamblers sitting at the table to place their bets. The table is not only roulette itself but also a field with the same numbers as on the roulette wheel. Then he spins the roulette wheel in one direction, and the opposite starts the ball. Players are not allowed to touch or otherwise influence the rotating wheel and ball. Gamblers cannot change the bet or make an additional one after the wheel has started spinning. Then the croupier announces the winning number. The income from the winnings is divided between the winning bets and the casino. If the ball gets a “zero” sector, all bets go to casino income. Take into account that in all casinos there are limits on both minimum and maximum bets, regardless of the roulette type.

Payout ratios for winning may vary depending on the type of roulette. The betting symbol itself also can be different.

Roulette Bets

Roulette Table

Bets can be divided into three types:

  • Inside Bets. These are bets on specific numbers placed on the field in the form of a table.
  • Outside Bets. These are all other bets. For example, the color of the chip, falling even or odd number, or at intervals of numbers. Outside bets are placed on the fields located on the edge of the game board with numbers.
  • Call bets. They are used only in European and French roulette. Gamblers announce their bets instead of placing cash on the table. Some professionals notice that these bets are used while playing on credit.

Types of Inside Bets

Inside bets are also split into several types. The most frequent are straight and split bets. The first one is a bet on a specific number, and the payment is 35:1. Split bets are bets on 2 neighboring numbers at the same time, which includes a “zero” bet. The payment is 17:1. If in the first case the chip is placed directly on the number, then in the second one it is placed on the border of two adjacent cells on the table.

Professionals also place street bets. These are bets on three numbers in one row, the payout ratio is 11:1. The chip is placed on the border of the internal and external betting areas.

A corner bet is a bet on four adjacent numbers. The payout ratio is 8:1. Chip is placed at the point where these numbers meet.

The next one is a Five Number bet. Only specific numbers are included in this bet. It comprises the following:

  • 0.
  • 00.
  • 1.
  • 2.
  • 3.

The casino pays 6:1 if a gambler wins.

And the last type of inside bets is a line bet. It is a bet on 2 adjacent rows of 3 numbers. The payout ratio is 5:1. The chip is placed on the outer line at the point where the two rows meet.

Types of Outside Bets

It is also essential to learn types of outside bets to know how to win at roulette. The first type is called Red or Black. A gambler has to bet on the red or black sector with a 1:1 payout. The chip is placed on the corresponding color sector.

One more outside bet is Even or Odd. It is a bet on any even or odd sector with a 1:1 payout. The chip shall be placed on the field marked “EVEN” or “ODD”.

Low or High bets are bets on a range of numbers 1-18 or a range 19-36, the payout ratio is 1:1. A chip is placed in the corresponding field 1-18″ or 19-36.

A Dozen Bet is a bet on a range of numbers 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36, and a payout here is 2:1. A chip is placed on the following slots:

  • 1st 12.  Numbers from 1 to 12.
  • 2nd 12. Numbers from 13 to 24.
  • 3 st 12. Numbers from 25 to 36.

Gamblers get 2:1 payouts for each dozen.

Column Bets are bets on 12 numbers in any of the columns with a payout of 2:1. The chip is placed under the selected column. There are three columns in total, and they are marked as 2 to 1.

Types of Call Bets

Although Call Bets are not as frequent as the previous ones, you need to learn its types to understand how a European wheel operates.

The first type is the Voisins du Zero. It covers 17 numbers. This betting sector combines the numbers adjacent to the right and left from a zero section. It covers 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25. Gamblers should place at least 9 chips.

Another call bet is the Jeu Zero. Gamblers have to place bets on numbers, including 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15. Gamblers have to place four chips.

One more bet is Tier du Cylindre that covers 12 numbers: 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 6, 33. While gambling, participants place 6 chips.

Gamblers can combine bets. For example, they can bet on both red and black slots at the same time. It is also possible to bet on a dozen and odd. What’s more, one can even bet on red, black, and zero slots, closing all the dropouts. Yet, since a bet on a zero sector has its limits on the maximum amount, even in this case the player will not be able to beat the casino.

Types of Roulette Wheels

There are two types of roulette wheels, such as European and American ones. They have much in common, but still, they also have differences gamblers should notice.

American Roulette Wheel

The main difference between American roulette and European roulette is the presence of an additional cell on the wheel. In contrast to European roulette, American roulette has one more section, such as a double zero section (00). Due to this extra sector, this online roulette type is considered less profitable for the player than the European one. Yet, the game is still quite popular, especially in American casinos.

In American roulette, the chips of each gambler differ in color and are marked with different rates.

European Roulette Wheel

In European roulette, the wheel is divided into 37 red and black sectors, and the colors must necessarily alternate. The wheel is divided into numbers from 0 to 36. In addition to the red and black segments, there is also a green one. This is a zero sector.

If you do not bet on a specific number, the payout will be at least 1:1. If the ball hits zero, all bets will go to the casino.

One more game gamblers can play with a European wheel is French roulette. This game is similar to the standard one. However, there are two special rules when playing roulette, such as En Prison and La Partage. They are very similar, but there is a slight difference. Both rules apply when there is a bet on equal roulette odds and a zero sector appears.

The gambler bet on red and loses his deposit because the ball stops at the zero section. According to standard rules, he will lose money, but if the En Prison rule applies, his bet is “in prison”. He sacrifices half of the bet and takes the other half or gives away the bet and tries to get the whole sum back. If red falls out the next time, the gambler gets his money back. If not, he loses everything.

A La Partage rule does not give the right to choose. The gambler simply returns half of the bet if he loses the same chances because of the zero sector.

Despite some differences between European and American roulette, the rules of the gameplay remain almost unchanged.

Roulette Strategies

The winning depends on luck. Yet, professionals use strategies to increase their chances. The most popular of them are below.

Martingale Strategy

The essence of this strategy is to double the stake after each loss. The player bets on equal chances. After each loss, he should double the stake. If he loses the bet on black, he bets again on black, but already on a larger amount. In case of another loss, the next time he bets again on black, the risk amount increases again.

After all, when the gambler wins, he still has a profit of one initial bet. The problem is that with long losses, the sums get high quickly. Then the gambler may just run out of money. For example, if you start the game with $1, then after the seventh loss you have to bet $128, and after the tenth, bet $1024.

There is also a roulette strategy called reverse Martingale. It is completely opposite from the traditional one and implies a doubling of the bet after each win.

D’Alembert Strategy

This strategy is less risky. As in the previous case, the gambler bets on equal chances. Yet, after losing, the bet is increased by a fixed amount, rather than doubling. The gambler chooses this sum himself, based on his bankroll. Choose no more than 1% of the bankroll, but it is safer to choose 0.5% of the sum.

For example, you have only $100 per game. So, the increase should not be more than $1. If the first bet is $1, the next one will be already $2, then it increases to $3, and so on. So, instead of $1024 after the tenth consecutive loss, you will have to bet only eleven dollars. Overall, the D’Alembert strategy is less complicated than the previous one.

Fibonacci Strategy

A Fibonacci sequence is a number, each of which is the sum of the previous two. The result is 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc. Each time just add the last two numbers to find a continuation of the sequence. Playing roulette on this system involves raising and lowering rates on this sequence.

When you lose, move forward, increasing the amount. When you win, lower the bet. The gambler will make a profit even if the won sum is less than the number of bets lost.

Summary

To sum up, this venture activity satisfies both professionals and amateurs. Beginners can start with a classic type after learning how to play roulette and then try an American wheel. More experienced gamblers can continue with French roulette and use strategies. So, don’t hesitate and begin gambling on roulette.
